THE SPICES ROUTE
2025
Let me invite you on an immersive exploration into the captivating universe of spices—nature’s treasures that not only elevate our meals but also nurture our well-being. Amidst this vibrant spectrum of flavor, ginger, known scientifically as Zingiber officinale, stands out as a cherished favorite. Its alluring appearance and delicate fragrance have long enchanted me, making it a staple in both my kitchen and my heart.
To truly appreciate ginger’s story, journey with me to southern India, where the lush landscapes of Kerala set the scene. On a small family-owned farm nestled amid rolling greenery, I witnessed ginger in its most authentic form. My experience as a photographer allowed me to document each stage of its journey—from soil to spice—in striking black and white, a style that, for me, imparts timeless depth and emotion to every frame.
In Fort Kochi, located on the tranquil peninsula of Ernakulam district, I observed a centuries-old ritual. Here, men and women meticulously wash the fresh rhizomes, honoring traditions passed down through generations. They then lay the ginger out under the relentless sun for ten days, patiently allowing it to dry. Once the drying process concludes, the rhizomes are packed into large jute sacks and sent to a cooperative, where they are ground into the aromatic powder that brings zest to our dishes.
The labor involved is intense, often performed in unforgiving heat, yet these artisans persist with remarkable resilience and dedication. Sadly, despite their essential contributions, they are rewarded with only modest wages. Through my humble photo documentary, I aim to acknowledge their extraordinary efforts and inspire thoughtful consideration of how our consumption choices ripple across the globe. In the end, we are all bound by the invisible threads that connect earth, human endeavor, and the flavors that delight our senses.
